Agreed, although ironically its preservation plan involves AO3 so the baskets may yet be together in the future. However that's better than no plan at all which is the case for many a site, and most other sites can only rely on the Internet Archive which is an absolute ocean of baskets in one place. Options are always limited it seems.
However having separate sites means they may develop differently, and meta may be just one branch of that, which is good in its own way.
