It's a new month and the MMM Challenge is now closed. We have added a total of 246 meta works to the community on AO3!

What happens now? While the challenge set some goals for the month of March, there's no reason not to continue transferring meta over throughout the year when you have time. Hopefully this community has provided encouragement and incentive that will keep everyone thinking about duplicating their meta elsewhere, both older meta and new content you write.

One thing we want everyone to know is that the March Meta Matters Challenge Community on AO3 can be added to throughout the year if you wish. And the Challenge will be back next year!

Whether one has transferred many, all one's works, or just a few, any additional works copied over during the challenge are works which are less likely to be lost in future moves or site collapses. So let's hear from everyone who took part this month with any of the following:

1) What did and didn't work for you as you took part in the MMM Challenge?

2) What you feel most pleased with as a result of your efforts this month.

This account accepts anonymous comments, so if you don't have a Dreamwidth account we'd still like to count you among our participants.

Also, a few suggestions for the year to come:

1) I'd like to encourage everyone who has read some interesting meta, either this past month or in the months to come, to rec it. A lot of rec posts that circulate end up being fic only. But wherever you rec works, whether it's in your account, at a recs community, or on AO3 (bookmarks function as rec lists, just ticky the Rec box), let people know! Making people more aware that meta is being written and can be found at AO3 will likely lead to more of that there and everywhere :)

2) For those of us new to AO3 or who write only meta, consider adding a permission statement to your profile. You can see an example on my profile. And lest you think no one would ever bother, check out the Out Of The Auditary fest!

Lastly, a reminder to anyone who hasn't seen the notice, AO3 is suffering some issues from the rise in activity this month. So keep in mind that your hit counts, if you're tracking those, are not going to be accurate for a while.

Thank you to everyone for taking part and following along this month!

Hello everyone! It's our last check-in before the challenge wraps this month.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) What's your favorite meta work you transferred this week and why?

2) Did you write new meta based on the last post's prompt? Share it here! Or if you didn't, share a link(s) to a work that's now housed on AO3 that you'd like to get more eyes on.

Remember, this account accepts anonymous comments, so if you don't have a Dreamwidth account we still want to hear from you and have you take part!

Hello everyone! It's check-in time again to see how we're all getting along with our meta importing.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) Number of works you've managed to either identify for future transfers, or which you've now moved to AO3.

2) Any problems you've been having as you copy/import your meta.

It's also time for another writing prompt! Why not write some meta about the process of taking part in this challenge?

Now that our month is winding to a close, is there anything you've learned from making this effort to preserve your work? Maybe it's something about your work that has been a surprise. Perhaps you've recovered a part of your fannish history that you forgot about?

Writing new meta this month is optional. If you do write something though, share a link to it in a future check-in post!

Hello everyone! It's check-in time again to see how we're all getting along with our meta importing.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) How many works have you identified for future transfers, or have you now moved to AO3?

Please don't hesitate to do self-promotion! Anyone participating or following this challenge is doing so because meta interests them and it's very likely someone would like to check out those works.

And if you've been lurking, remember that you can join in to this challenge at any point during the month. The important part is getting started!

It's also time for another writing prompt!

Let's get meta about meta. When you write meta, what is it you're hoping that happens? Are you hoping to prompt other people into writing their own meta? Or for a long-running discussion in your post? Maybe your meta might inspire people to create other works -- a fan vid, story, or some research. Or maybe it's just the relief of getting your thoughts in order as you write out what's been nagging at your brain.

Whatever it is, do a little meta on your process and expectations.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) What fandom would you like to find more meta for (through this challenge or otherwise) and why?

2) Number of works you've managed to either identify for future transfers, or which you've now moved to AO3.

Hello everyone! It's check-in time again to see how we're all getting along with our meta importing.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) Are you having internal debates about what content you're considering moving versus not copying over?
2) Are you having any problems moving your meta?

It's also time for your first writing prompt! Can you write some new meta based on old meta you've come across? This could be:

* an update to what you wrote before
* current you is arguing with former you about your ideas
* taking the same idea and applying it to a different fandom
* expressing some of the same ideas in a different format

Whatever approach you take, see if an older work you've been rehousing can be a jumping off point for a new work.

Writing new meta this month is optional. If you do write something though, share a link to it in a future check-in post!

Welcome to the first Meta Matters Challenge! I'm your moderator, [personal profile] yourlibrarian.

These posts will be used for us all to check-in with one another, offer encouragement and answers to questions, and maybe tips we come up with as we copy our work to AO3.

Before we begin, some reminders. Please look over the FAQ as there are some important bits for everyone to follow, namely: Read more... )

Since this is our first check-in, please comment with one or more of the following:

1) Details about you: This could include canons (if any) you've written meta in, years in fandom, things you tend to write about (if you've noticed themes), or whatever else you'd like to share.

2) Details about your meta: How many years worth of work are you going to be looking through? Have you already started reviewing fandom accounts? Do you have organizing tips to share as we go sorting through our posts?

3) Goals you have: Maybe you want to back up a certain number of posts to AO3. Maybe you want to compare things you used to write about to things you're writing now. Maybe the challenge is an opportunity for you to start using AO3 as a creator as well as a reader. Maybe it's a good prompt to re-read discussions in your posts that you'd forgotten about. We all have hopes of what we can accomplish this month. Feel free to share them!

Also, if you have any questions not already covered in our introductory post or in our FAQ, include them here.
Remember, this account accepts anonymous comments, so if you don't have a Dreamwidth account we still want to hear from you and have you take part. Just sign your messages with your username and we'll all get to know you!

EDIT: AO3 has announced that there is a chance the site will be temporarily unavailable March 1 due to new server installation. Anyone with a Twitter account is encouraged to follow the AO3 Status account as that's where they announce tech issues or other updates regarding the site's function.

TLDR Details

The March Meta Matters Challenge is focused on not just new meta, but making sure older meta gets a chance to be read and remain a part of fandom history. Join us in March to start archiving your work!
