Congratulations to everyone who took part in the challenge!

The MMM Challenge is now closed but preserving your works can continue throughout the year, either when you have time or as you write new works. Hopefully this community has provided encouragement and incentive during this month that will keep everyone thinking about duplicating their meta elsewhere, both older meta and new content you write.

Whether one has transferred many, all one's works, or just a few, any additional works copied over during the challenge are works which are less likely to be lost in future moves or site collapses.

If you were not able to write to the prompts this month, you can always do so later on and share them next year!

The MMM Challenge will return March 2026. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions of fests, challenges or other fan events coming up this year which welcome the meta format, comment about them here! And if you don't, what meta writing prompts would you like to see next year?

Hello everyone! It's our last check-in before the challenge wraps on April 1. Comment below with any of the following:

1) What's your favorite meta work you transferred this month and why?

2) Any road blocks you ran into in meeting your goals?

Remember, this account accepts anonymous comments, so if you don't have a Dreamwidth account we still want to hear from you and have you take part.

Hello everyone! It's time for our last writing prompt:

What is something you miss that you'd either like to have back or just feel nostalgic about? This could be an older canon, some fandom habits that have changed, or even ways of viewing or reading works.

Writing new meta this month is optional. If you do write something though, share a link to it in a future check-in post!

Hello everyone! It's check-in time again to see how we're all getting along with our meta importing.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) Is there some meta you've always wanted to see someone else write that you haven't come across yet? (Maybe you'll incentivize someone else doing the challenge!)

2) Did you write new meta based on the last post's prompt? Share it here! Or if you didn't, share a link(s) to a work that's now housed elsewhere that you'd like to get more eyes on.

And if you've been lurking, remember that you can join in to this challenge at any point during the month. The important part is getting started!

It's February 1, so that means the kickoff to this year's March Meta Matters Challenge is just 4 weeks away! As usual, the challenge involves locating and copying over meta you've created to a second site in order to ensure its preservation. There will also be several prompts for creating new meta.

As discussed last year, and recorded in our FAQ it's recommended to cross post meta to SquidgeWorld where all types of it are welcome. Additionally, Squidge offers image hosting for fandom content, so if your meta includes images and you need a host, the site will suit.

This does not mean that any challenge participant must use SquidgeWorld, however. If you would prefer to use AO3, to copy content from Tumblr to Dreamwidth, to ensure content is backed up at the Internet Archive, etc. you can choose whatever second destination you would like. The MMM Challenge is primarily concerned with preserving meta so that it doesn't disappear or get lost with site changes, and secondarily with ensuring meta can be easily found so that people can engage with it. Some sites do better at ensuring these things than others.

Feel free to ask questions here about the challenge, locations, etc. Otherwise look for our opening post on March 1!

Following my post in June about having content flagged at AO3, I received a notice this week about two more works. While I don't have any problems deleting them, there was a bigger issue within the email.

"On 17 June 2022, you were formally warned for violating Section IV.H. of the Terms of Service, and on 20 June 2022, we clarified for you that "We do not consider responses to movies or episode reactions to be non-ephemeral fanworks." You were also told that additional violations could result in your suspension from the Archive.

As a result of this second violation, you have been suspended for 30 days. While you are suspended, you cannot post, edit, or delete content on the Archive." Read more... )

This past week I got a notice from AO3's Policy & Abuse Committee that four of my posts had been flagged for not conforming to the guidelines for non-fiction content.

I responded with what I took to be the relevant portions of their TOS FAQ which addressed ephemerality and the fact that ""We will, in general, defer to the creator's characterization of a work as fannish nonfiction as long as it has a reasonably perceptible fannish connection, either to a specific source or to fandom in general, and takes the form of an independent, nonephemeral commentary." Hello everyone! It's time for another writing prompt!

For this year's International Fanworks Day, the OTW chose the theme of "classic fanworks." Many stories were recced in their Feedback Fest but there are also many meta pieces we might consider classics in some way –- whether well known in a particular fandom, or influential in some way.

Why not write about the effect of a particular piece of meta you are familiar with? It could be something you have re-read, or something you have seen repeated in other ways. Apply whatever interpretation of "classic" you would like.

Hello everyone! It's check-in time again to see how we're all getting along with our meta importing.

Following up from the last post, it seems there is no particular consensus on our default tags, so they will stay as "Nonfiction" and "Meta" on our transferred content. However just a reminder that there are various other more specific canon tags available at AO3 and our FAQ offers guidance on these as well as general posting matters. So feel free to add more tags that apply to your posts.

It's also time for your first writing prompt! Is there any kind of meta that prompts personal memories? This could be:

* meta written in a certain time period that evokes memories of it
* meta about a certain fandom context that may have changed
* meta that led to certain things happening
* meta that connected to personal events in some way

This meta may have been your own or someone else's, and it could involve fandom activities or things about a canon.

I'd also like to get feedback on the following question. In our rules, which were shared in our kickoff post, there's guidance to tag all posts with "Nonfiction" and "Meta." The "Nonfiction" tag is particularly key because not only does it cover anything we'd be including, but unlike the "Meta" tag it is not mingled with fiction works.

However the "Meta" tag is often used instead of the "Metafiction" tag, and it may also be less descriptive than other tags. For example there are canonical tags for "Reviews", "Episode Reviews", "Essays", "Transcribed" and "Commentary." (There are not, I have discovered, any for Statistics, Surveys, Polls, etc. though these might get canonized in the future). Read more... )

Welcome to year 3 of the Meta Matters Challenge! I'm your moderator, [personal profile] yourlibrarian.

These posts will be used for us all to check-in with one another, offer encouragement and answers to questions, and maybe tips we come up with as we copy our work to AO3.

Before we begin, some reminders. Please look over the FAQ as there are some important bits for everyone to follow, namely: Read more... )

Spotted this and thought that there might be podficcers here interested in a podfic meta challenge. Signups are going on until January 30 with a submission deadline of April 24. You can take a look at the challenge FAQ for more info.

Also, a reminder that [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge returns for its 3rd session on March 1!

3 for the Memories is an annual community opening on January 3, 2022 and running until January 24. Its purpose is to share photos that each member has taken during the prior year. This might be the 3 photos that they feel best encapsulate their year, or are simply the ones they most wish to share by whichever criteria they choose. Anyone can participate by just joining the community.

Rules

1) Three photos only per person during each annual session. Members are encouraged to discuss the reason for their choices.

2) Photos can be hosted at Dreamwidth or elsewhere, and should not be larger than 800 px width or height.

3) All three photos should be in the same post. Cut tags should be placed after the first photo.

3 for the Memories is not a competition, and entries are not being judged. Rather, participants are encouraged to share photos they find meaningful in some way as a form of sharing different experiences with one another. If you have any questions, visit our masterpost and ask away!

The Meta Matters Challenge wrapped up only a few days ago, but here are a few more opportunities for meta writing in the coming months:

[community profile] meta_manifesto is running again this year and what can be submitted is quite broad as "Meta essays on individual characters, on arcs, on different adaptations or on whole canons are welcome" as well as multimedia submissions. Submitted works will be revealed at the end of May.

[community profile] unconventionalfanworkex is a gift exchange for fanwork besides traditional fic and art, including meta and in-universe documents. Nominations are currently being taken and signups end May 15.

If you know of any other meta writing challenges or communities, please share them. I'd be glad to have affiliates for MMM, and I expect these are unusual enough it's helpful to spread the word.

It's a new month and the MMM Challenge is closed.

What happens now? While this community was here to offer encouragement and help with your goals, there's no reason not to continue transferring meta over throughout the year when you have time. One thing to know is that the Meta Matters Challenge Collection on AO3 can be added to throughout the year if you wish. And the Challenge will be back next year!

Whether one has transferred many, all one's works, or just a few, any additional works copied over during the challenge are works which are less likely to be lost in future moves or site collapses. This account accepts anonymous comments, so if you don't have a Dreamwidth account we'd still like to count you among our participants. Let us know what goals you met or what you still plan to do.

Also, a suggestion for the year to come:

I'd like to encourage everyone who has read some interesting meta, either this past month or in the months to come, to rec it. A lot of rec posts that circulate end up being fic only. But wherever you rec works, whether it's in your account, at a recs community, or on AO3 (bookmarks function as rec lists, just ticky the Rec box), let people know.

Making people more aware that meta is being written and can be found at AO3 will likely lead to more of that there and everywhere :) Plus, I've already read meta from fellow participants that is well worth checking out!

Thank you to everyone for taking part and following along this month!

Hello everyone! It's our last check-in before the challenge wraps on Thursday.

Comment below with any of the following:

1) Is there something you always forget to do when you're posting work to AO3?

2) What's your favorite meta work you transferred this week and why?

It's also time for another writing prompt! How have you seen your fandom(s) change as a result of canon format changes? This might be:

* Because of difficulty or ease of access to the canon source
* Because of the way you use devices to access the canon
* Because of a canon extending across different formats
* Something else!

Writing new meta this month is optional. If you do write something though, share a link to it in a future check-in post!

TLDR Details

The March Meta Matters Challenge is focused on not just new meta, but making sure older meta gets a chance to be read and remain a part of fandom history. Join us in March to start archiving your work!
